Remember that as we mature, our ability to appear and feel young involves more than human growth hormone replacement therapy, though that can certainly be an essential key. Exercise, proper sleep, food selections, minerals and vitamins all combine in a synergy to play integral roles in this process.

Magnesium deficiency has long been associated with Alzheimer's Disease. As far back as 1990 (okay, maybe not THAT long ago), it was discovered that low levels of Magnesium, particularly in that part of the brain associated with short- and long-term memory, appears to be an important factor in Alzheimer's disease. However, what is news now is the testing used to discover magnesium deficiency and also mis-diagnosis of Alzheimer's, when in fact it could be something else.

Diet & Weight Loss
Although the most important factor in a weight loss plan is to reduce the total number of calories, you'll also need to decide how you want to allocate your calories among carbohydrate, fat, and protein.
Some experts argue for a diet that's low in fat and high in carbohydrates; others recommend a diet that's low in carbohydrates and high in protein and fat; and others suggest a nearly balanced intake of all three. All of these have their advocates and there is a lot of debate about which is the best method of losing weight. Ultimately, which one is best for you depends on your individual health history and food preferences. Consulting with a licensed nutritionist or registered dietitian may be also helpful in deciding which approach is most appropriate.
If you're not sure, start with 60% carbohydrates, 25% fat, and 15% protein.

Did you know that over one billion people are now overweight?
Research by Aline Jelenkovic Moreno states, "Obesity is seen as the great pandemia of the 21st century. Recent data point to more than a billion adults in the world suffering from overweight, of which 300 million are clinically obese. What is more, the rates of child obesity show a worrying increase, with more than 155 million children and adolescents being overweight, of which 40 million are clearly obese."
When I read that more than a BILLION people are overweight I couldn't believe it. I've long understood that the U.S. population is about two-thirds overweight, but now it seems our country's unhealthy habits have spread globally.
I'd rather not think of these stats as a condemnation, but rather a large wake-up call.
For obesity to be one of the top diseases (and causes of death) in the world should come as an outrage. Besides quitting smoking, it is one of the most preventable diseases in the world to fight against.
And, we must truly fight against it...
The reason we can't just casually try to put an end to obesity is that we are bombarded from every angle by food manufacturers promoting unhealthy foods and diets. The fact that obesity rates have increased as food becomes more processed and unnatural is not a coincidence.
Plus, exercise is seen as a luxury for those who have the time.
Unfortunately, being active is not a luxury anyone can afford not to indulge in. The fact that most people sit for the majority of the day is a good indicator that at least 30 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous activity is needed.
Lastly, I will finish with this thought which I believe in the end is the only way we can reverse the obesity numbers and prevent them from climbing.
I feel that in order to create permanent change we must look at weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight as simply a by-product of valuing health. Right now, I believe that the majority of people place convenience (which includes processed foods, fast food, and medication) above living a healthy lifestyle. This leads to not wanting to put in the extra effort needed to eat well, exercise, and live an overall healthy life.
Unless we're willing to change our individual and collective view of how we live our life, then we may be headed for higher obesity rates and all the effects it carries along with it.
I for one will continue to spread the word about how to live a life based on eating well, proper exercise, and stress reduction, which in turn will provide you with a life-time of healthy benefits - I hope you'll help me in spreading this word!

As you may have heard, this blog will no longer be active in 2011. We have enjoyed sharing useful information with you, including the latest research, tips on dieting, exercise, weight loss, cooking and recipe ideas, and more. Thank you for reading and for your insightful comments and additional ideas.
In considering the final thoughts to leave you with, I decided to reflect upon what I personally feel are the two of the most important tenets in weight loss success.
Have you heard that one of the best ways to start an exercise program is by simply walking?
You heard that right. When you are just easing your way back (or starting fresh) into a fitness program one of the best ways to help your body acclimate to the new workload is through walking.
Every workout should have a short-term goal and your walking program is no different. You should aim for 10,000 steps per day. You've probably heard that magic number before and it will serve as a daily concrete number to shoot for.
Why 10,000 steps?
10,000 steps is roughly equal to about 5 miles or about 60 minutes worth of walking depending on your fitness level. The US Centers for Disease Control recommend this amount of physical exercise per day.
How do you get started?
The best way to begin any exercise program is to write the time you are going to workout into your schedule and make it part of your routine just like anything else. Your health has to be a priority and therefore, you must set aside a block of time to accomplish your fitness goals each day.
I recommend picking up a cheap pedometer that will count your steps for you as you walk throughout the day. You can also feel free to break your walk into two 30-minute walks or even three 20-minute sessions. The most important thing is that you reach your daily milestone of 10,000 steps!
Believe it or not it can actually be pretty fun checking in with your pedometer throughout the day to see how many steps you've accumulated. It won't be long before you are parking further from the shopping mall entrance or sneaking in a quick walk during lunch.
It's one of the easiest ways to start reaping the benefits of good health, so get started today!

In the wake of Tiger Woods' public confession concerning his infidelity, the question is "Can you really be addicted to sex?" Maureen Canning, a licensed marriage and family therapist at the Meadows in Wickenburg, AZ, says yes.
“Woods has created a dialogue among couples, giving them a definition for a serious problem that’s plagued relationships,” Canning says. “Women are finally realizing, ‘I’m not the only one.’”

New studies on heart disease and diet show that reducing saturated fat is just a start. For the amount of saturated fats we remove from the diet, we need to be adding polyunsaturated fats to take their place.
"Saturated fat is not so bad for you that you can replace it with anything and get [a] benefit," says lead study author Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, the co-director of the Program in Cardiovascular Epidemiology at Brigham and…

Extra folic acid has been added to flour and rice for the last decade. Folic acid is the synthetic form of the B-vitamin folate. The Federal Government increased the amount of folic acid in white flour and rice in an effort to reduce the occurrence of certain types of birth defects.
"The more we learn about folic acid, the more it's clear that giving it to everyone has very real risks," says folic acid researcher…

A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently associated multivitamins and breast cancer in women. The study looked at medical information from 35,000 Swedish women, ranging from age 49 to 83 over a 10-year period. All of the women included in the study were cancer free at the beginning of the study. Researchers found that older women who took a multivitamin were 19 percent more likely to be diagnosed with breast…

Resveratrol is a phytochemical found in a variety of plants, fruits and associated fruit products, including grapes, mulberries and blueberries. It has been linked to anti-aging, antioxidant and cardio protective benefits. Some scientists have hypothesized that it may be partially responsible for the "French Paradox," the seemingly low rate of cardiovascular disease among the French. A study conducted in 2008 found that resveratrol consumption similar to the amounts found in a pattern of normal wine consumption may have a positive outcome on ischemic cardiovascular disease. For 15 days, 20 healthy volunteers consumed 300mg of either red or white wine. There was evidence of inhibition of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production and platelet formation, leading researchers to conclude that resveratrol may contribute the positive effects observed with wine consumption. Further research on the potential benefits and risks of resveratrol is warranted.

Blueberries and their juice are commonly associated with antioxidant power. These tiny fruits grow primarily in North America and are a rich source of polyphenols, such as anthocyanins. In a recent study, the phytochemicals found in blueberries were associated with improving insulin resistance in obese participants. The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study required twice daily consumption of blueberry bioactives for a period of six weeks. At the end of the study period, participants who received the blueberry compounds showed a significant increase in insulin sensitivity over those given the placebo. Significant steps were taken to address potential confounding factors, such as counseling and monitoring participants to ensure there were no changes in weight or physical activity. Researchers concluded that further research to explore the cellular mechanisms and the potential for long-term benefits is needed.

In a placebo-controlled study on muscle pain in endurance athletes, it was found that tart cherry juice may have attenuated muscle soreness after endurance runs. It is thought that muscle soreness after activity is due to oxidative damage and inflammation. Antioxidants such as those found in tart cherry may help reduce the effects of the oxidative damage and inflammation, thus reducing the associated pain. During the seven-day study, one participant reported some discomfort after consumption of the study beverage and consequently withdrew. There were no other adverse events reported. Researchers advise that results be interpreted cautiously, due to study limitations such as the subjective assessment of pain as reported by participants. Further research is warranted to determine the mechanism of action for the pain and inflammation reduction observed in the study group.
A recent clinical study of a mangosteen dietary supplement with vitamins and minerals was found to show positive benefits to human immune function. A randomized double blind placebo-controlled trial was conducted with 59 healthy human volunteers over the course of 30 days. At the conclusion of the trial, the data indicated a statistically significant change in immune function markers from the baseline in the study group versus the placebo group. The changes were positive and pointed to enhance immune function. Subjects from the study group also self reported a greater sense of improved health. Further studies evaluating the effects of the mangosteen product on different population groups with emphasis on long term outcomes is warranted. Click here for more information
